Optimus Prime shows a dark side in first ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ trailer

Transformers: The Last Knight - Teaser Trailer (2017) Official - Paramount Pictures
The first trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight has arrived online, and it appears that fans of the famous “robots in disguise” will be seeing a very different side of Autobot leader Optimus Prime this time around.

In the trailer, which seems to span several time periods and locations on both Earth and in space, the voice of Sir Anthony Hopkins can be heard speaking over the explosive events and offering a cryptic appraisal of a looming war between two worlds — one that will require sacrifice. The preview concludes with a scene featuring Optimus Prime throwing fellow Autobot soldier Bumblebee to the ground and asking for forgiveness as he seemingly tears the latter robot apart and then impales him.

Once again directed by Michael Bay, the new Transformers film will feature returning Autobot characters Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Hound, and Drift, as well as Megatron and Barricade of the Decepticons. Confirmed newcomers to the big-screen franchise in this installment include Hot Rod (who likely turns into a sports car of some sort) and Sqweeks (who turns into a Vespa) for the Autobots, as well as Onslaught (a green tow truck) for the Decepticons.

Fans have also speculated that the massive, glowing planet glimpsed in the trailer that seems to be composed of machinery could very well be Unicron — the gigantic, planet-consuming villain introduced in the beloved 1986 animated feature The Transformers: The Movie. Unicron was famously voiced by Orson Welles in that film, and it was his final movie role before his death.

Returning human cast members confirmed to appear in the film include Transformers: Age of Extinction star Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, Josh Duhamel as Lt. Col. Lennox, Tyrese Gibson as Robert Epps, and Stanley Tucci as Joshua Joyce all reprising their roles from previous installments of the series. New cast members include the aforementioned Hopkins in an unidentified role and Isabela Moner (100 Things to Do Before High School, Growing Up Fisher) as Izabella, as well as Jerrod Carmichael, Laura Haddock, and Santiago Cabrera. Once Upon A Time actor Liam Carrigan will reportedly play King Arthur in the film.

Transformers: The Last Knight is scheduled to hit theaters June 23, 2017.

These 5 TV shows could be the next The Last of Us

There used to be this belief in Hollywood that video game adaptions were cursed due to their lack of critical acclaim or porous box office results. Films and series considered failures to support the curse theory include Super Mario Bros., Doom, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Assassin's Creed, and House Of The Dead. However, the tide is changing in recent years as Sonic the Hedgehog, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Uncharted became huge hits. In television, the series that shattered the curse, proving video game adaptations should be taken more seriously, is The Last of Us.

Based on the video game franchise of the same name, The Last of Us follows Joel (The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal), a smuggler in a post-apocalyptic America tasked with transporting a teenage girl named Ellie (Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey) across the country as a mass fungal infection ravages the human population. Critics hailed The Last of Us as the greatest video game adaption of all time. Additionally, The Last of Us accumulated the biggest viewership for HBO since Game of Thrones.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts trailer spotlights the arrival of Unicron
Two transformers stand next to each other in Rise of the Beasts.

The battle for Earth rages on in the latest trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The latest footage pits the villainous Unicron at the center of the action. Debuting in the 1986 animated film The Transformers: The Movie, the Unicron is the leader of the evil Terrorcons that devour worlds. As Mirage says in the trailer, the Unicron "eats planets."

Directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II), Rise of the Beasts will introduce audiences to the Beast Wars storyline as the Autobots find new allies in the form of the Maximals. Set in 1994 New York City, the film stars Anthony Ramos (Hamilton) as Noah Diaz, an ex-military electronics expert. Heteams up with an Autobot spy named Mirage (Bupkis' Pete Davidson), who transforms into a silver-blue Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8. Diaz is eventually led to Optimus Prime (Transformers' Peter Cullen) as he joins in the global fight to save humanity. The Autobots ally themselves with a new Transformers faction, the Maximals, to battle the Unicron and the Terrorcons.

Dracula strikes in first trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter
Corey Hawkins and Liam Cunningham in The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

In retrospect, Universal Pictures may have made a mistake by releasing two Dracula-themed movies in the same year. While Renfield is coming out this week with a very comedic take on Dracula (and Nicolas Cage in that role), the upcoming horror flick The Last Voyage of the Demeter has a completely different tone. And if the first trailer is any indication, there are some genuine scares ahead.
