Caesar is back with a vengeance in new ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ trailer

It’s ape versus human again. With War for the Planet of the Apes set to round out the franchise’s latest trilogy this summer, 20th Century Fox unveiled a new trailer on Thursday at Cinema Con in Las Vegas. The action-packed preview teases the intense war ahead while showing off the impressive visual effects the recent reboots are known for.

In the upcoming film, a new wave of war comes to pass, just as ape Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) predicted at the end of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.  This one seems to have higher stakes than ever. The humans are hell-bent on destroying the apes completely because they believe their own survival depends on it.

The trailer highlights the film’s dangerous new antagonist, the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), who clearly has no plans to reciprocate the mercy shown to his kind in the past.

“There are times when it is necessary to abandon our humanity to save humanity,” he says in the trailer.

He may not be the only one to condone deplorable acts, however; the synopsis teases that Caesar “wrestles with his darker instincts” after a horrific attack on the apes. The ape leader becomes determined to get revenge, and the trailer shows that he will eventually get the chance when he faces off against the Colonel himself.

The Matt Reeves-directed sci-fi flick brings back Serkis along with Karin Konoval (Maurice), Judy Greer (Cornelia), and Terry Notary (Terry). The film also stars Steve Zahn and Amiah Miller, who, like Harrelson, are new to the franchise.

War for the Planet of the Apes is scheduled for release on July 14.

A new era begins in first Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer
Noa and his bird friend in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

In 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes started a new chapter in the franchise by rebooting the film series and focusing on the story of the legendary ape leader Caesar. In 2017, War for the Planet of the Apes brought Caesar's story to a conclusion, but the reboot timeline lives on in next summer's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Generations have passed since the time of Caesar, and while the new movies haven't caught up with the time frame of the original movies yet, the first teaser trailer for Kingdom reveals that humanity is looking more and more like the savages they were in the first Planet of the Apes.

Is Jennifer Garner’s 2005 Elektra movie really that bad?
Jennifer Garner in Elektra.

Twenty years after she originated the role of Elektra in the Ben Affleck movie Daredevil, Deadline is reporting that Jennifer Garner will return to her Marvel character in Deadpool 3. The Ryan Reynolds-led film also stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and it is heavily rumored that it will feature other characters and actors from 20th Century Fox's Marvel movies. Garner's inclusion certainly makes those rumors appear to be true. And Garner has the unique, and dubious distinction, of headlining the very first solo Marvel heroine movie: Elektra.

Following Daredevil's release in 2003, Fox didn't immediately order a sequel. Instead, Fox went forward with a spinoff movie starring Garner's character, Elektra Natchios. Elektra arrived in theaters on January 14, 2005, and it promptly bombed at the box office. The poorly reviewed movie arguably prevented other Marvel heroines from getting their chance to headline a film until Captain Marvel in 2019. It's also worth noting that neither Elektra nor Daredevil are currently available to stream on any service, although they can be purchased or rented from digital outlets. If Marvel and Disney want to bury these films, that's the easy way to do it.

A war begins in the new trailer for Dune: Part Two
Timothée Chalamet in "Dune: Part Two."

By splitting Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune into two parts, director Denis Villeneuve delayed the introduction of the story's primary villain: The Emperor of the Universe, Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken). But in the newly released trailer for Dune: Part Two, viewers finally get their first glimpse at the man who plotted the downfall of House Atreides. House Harkonnen may have struck the blow against their rival house, but Shaddam IV allowed it because he feared that the late Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) would unseat him. But the Emperor has badly miscalculated, because Leto's son, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), is now poised to make Shaddam IV's fears into a reality.
