John Goodman’s character begins to quarrel with his species’ place on earth in the first tantalizing trailer for Kong: Skull Island, released yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con.
“This planet doesn’t belong to us,” Goodman voices over, as the camera pans a massive mountain imprinted with the bloody mark of an even bigger creature. “Each species owned this earth long before mankind. I spent 30 years trying to prove the truth: monsters exist.”
That monster, of course, is none other than King Kong, the giant gorilla whose story has been explored in multiple formats, most recently the 2005 Peter Jackson movie, which was a remake of the 1933 film of the same name.
With a revamped crew and new stories to tell, the Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed March 2017 flick will feature a cast of newcomers and veteran actors alike, including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly.
The movie will act as somewhat of an origin story for King Kong, as explorers travel to Skull Island for what is supposed to be a “joy ride,” and a “survey job.”
But what the travelers discover, as Samuel L. Jackson voices in the trailer, is “a monster from some bygone era. It’s time to show that man is king.”
The film, created by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., is “intended to be part of Legendary’s efforts to create a giant movie-monster universe, at some point expected to cross over with the studio’s Godzilla franchise,” The Verge reports.
While there’s a lot of time between now and March 10, expect to see more trailers and sneak-peaks for the film reboot, which will surely receive plenty of hype in the coming months.
