It’s been almost seven years since Heavenly Sword was released for the PlayStation 3 and introduced gamers to its memorable heroine, Nariko, and the powerful sword that forced her to embark on a grand adventure. While the rumored sequels to Ninja Theory’s well-received game never materialized, the long-awaited, animated feature will finally hit shelves — and the PlayStation Network — later this year, with the first trailer for the film debuting online this week.

The first trailer for Heavenly Sword debuted at IGN, where it was also announced that the film will be available in September on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as PSN. Actress Anna Torv (Fringe) will reprise her role as the voice (and physical model) for Nariko, with Spider-Man 2 actor Alfred Molina voicing the film’s villain, the savage King Bohan. The role of King Bohan was previously voiced by actor Andy Serkis, who also served as the 2007 game’s Dramatic Director and co-writer of the game’s story. Actor Thomas Jane (The Punisher) voices Loki in the film.

The original game followed Nariko on a quest to deliver the legendary “Heavenly Sword” — a weapon of immense power — to its destined owner in order to turn back the tide of war led by the tyrannical King Bohan. Along the way, Nariko must learn to use the sword herself in order to keep it out of the hands of Bohan and his generals, even though she knows the sword is cursed to take a deadly toll on any mortal who wields it.

Heavenly Sword will be available September 2.

This is going to be a strange (but exciting) summer for movies. Many of the franchises that have been so dominant at the box office in recent years are either laying low or releasing a smaller number of movies. As a result, we're getting entries from some other franchises, as well as a couple of original titles that are also worth getting excited about.

This forgotten 2009 movie is a modern horror classic. Here’s why you should watch it (if you can)

Sam Raimi's output over the past 20 years has been disappointingly small. Throughout the 1980s and early '90s, Raimi established himself as one of the most distinct artistic voices of his generation. With films like Evil Dead II, Darkman, and Army of Darkness, he combined his independent filmmaking roots with his uniquely goofy, acidic sense of humor to deliver horror and blockbuster experiences that are as confidently stylish as they are mind-bogglingly ludricous. In the late '90s, he proved himself as a filmmaker capable of making award-worthy genre fare (A Simple Plan) and working with bona fide movie stars (Sharon Stone in The Quick and the Dead) before becoming a beloved household name by directing 2002's Spider-Man and its sequel, 2004's Spider-Man 2.

In the years since his artistically compromised Spider-Man 3 hit theaters in 2007, though, Raimi has more or less faded away from the mainstream consciousness. He's only directed a few films since Spider-Man 3, including the ambitious, but disappointing Oz: The Great and Powerful and 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which he seemingly did as a favor to Marvel Studios. That said, between Spider-Man 3 and Oz: The Great and Powerful, Raimi did direct the underrated 2009 spine-chiller Drag Me to Hell.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.
