While promoting his new film Hunt for the Wilderpeople at the Sundance Film Festival, Waititi revealed that his follow-up to What We Do In The Shadows already has an official title, and that the project will explore the daily life of another group of supernatural creatures that featured prominently in the 2015 film.
“Jemaine [Clement] and I are trying to write a werewolves spinoff,” Waititi told Crave Online during the festival. “It’s going to be called We’re Wolves, like ‘We are wolves.’ We’re Wolves.”
In the 2015 film, Waititi and Clement play vampire flatmates in New Zealand dealing with a variety of issues both mundane and supernatural that include sporadic encounters with a local group of werewolves led by Anton, a character played by Flight of the Conchords regular Rhys Darby. It’s uncertain whether Darby will reprise his role for the film, but given the frequency of collaborations between Waititi, Clement, and Darby, it’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of Anton.
The recipient of an Oscar nomination for his 2004 short film Two Cars, One Night, Waititi also directed the highest-grossing film in New Zealand’s history, his 2010 coming-of-age comedy Boy.
Production on We’re Wolves is expected to begin after Waititi finishes work on Thor: Ragnarok, the third solo film in Marvel’s Thor franchise. Set to bring back Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder and Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Thor: Ragnarok is currently scheduled to hit theaters November 3, 2017.
According to Waititi, We’re Wolves will “most likely be the next thing” after Thor: Ragnarok.
