Will X-Files revival series continue? Fox talks potential second installment

x files revival second installment scully mulder

Love for The X-Files didn’t wane in the decade-plus that the series was off the air, so it’s no surprise that Fox is interested in more of the recent revival series. Fox TV Group Chairs Dana Walden and Gary Newman recently opened up about a potential next installment in the event series, and they painted a pretty rosy picture.

“We have had conversations with (creator) Chris Carter and (stars) David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson,” Walden said during an upfront press call, according to Deadline. “I believe everyone is on board to do another installment of the show.”

Fans should settle in for another wait, though. Sure, it won’t be quite so bad as the nearly 14 years it took for us to get a revival, but a second installment won’t come as quickly as many would hope. Walden indicated that an announcement probably wouldn’t come until “this time next year.” Newman reinforced that message, adding that “it shouldn’t be anything you anticipate before the 17-18 season,” according to E! Online.

The holdup, it seems, is the status of Duchovny and Anderson, who play the beloved onscreen duo of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Although Walden reassured fans that the actors want to make more of the series, scheduling is definitely a factor. Duchovny also stars in the NBC period crime drama Aquarius, after all, while Anderson has kept busy with roles in the BBC serial War & Peace and the upcoming film Viceroy House.

Fortunately, X-Files fans have proven patient. Not only did the revival series draw strong ratings, it was one of Fox’s top performers last season, as Deadline points out. You can have too much of a good thing, so perhaps the anticipation will make the next installment in the revival series even sweeter.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
