The new X-Men: Apocalypse featurette is a primer on the powerful mutant

X-Men: Apocalypse will pit Marvel’s mutant superhero team against their biggest threat yet. A new featurette, released today by 20th Century Fox, introduces the scary villain, who just so happens to be the first and most powerful mutant.

An immortal, Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac) was born thousands of years ago. Throughout the millennia, he has taken the bodies of other mutants to rejuvenate himself, gaining their abilities as well. The result means that he is extraordinarily powerful — more so than the X-Men. “He can control all of us,” we hear at one point.

On top of his crazy powers, Apocalypse apparently has a god complex. “He brought civilization to mankind, but, in turn, believed he was a god,” says director Bryan Singer in the featurette.

He’s so convinced of his right to control mankind that when he awakens after thousands of years to a version of civilization he finds disappointing, he’s ready to wipe it all out in order to establish a new world order. “You’re all my children, and you’re lost,” Apocalypse announces.

Yet though he’s terrifying alone, Apocalypse raises the stakes by recruiting still more mutants to join him, including Magneto (Michael Fassbender). Clearly outmatched, the X-Men have to find some help of their own. Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Professor X (James McAvoy) set about training young newcomers to go to war against the OG mutant and his gang.

The screenplay is based on a story written by its screenwriter, Simon Kinberg, along with Singer, Michael Dougherty, and Dan Harris. Of course, it’s based on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s original X-Men comics as well. The film’s cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn, Lucas Till, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alexandra Shipp, Josh Helman, Lana Condor, and Ben Hardy.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.
