After The Walking Dead, post-apocalyptic dramas are kind of passé. Most of them have well-worn premises that have been done many times before. Regardless, you haven’t seen one quite like Y: The Last Man.
In 2002, Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra launched the Y: The Last Man comic book series through DC’s Vertigo line. Through 60-issues, they developed a world where Yorick Brown was literally the last surviving male of the human race. However, if you were expecting a feminist Utopia to emerge, think again. The women of this world are just as human and flawed as the men were. And in the new age, the battle for control is going to get quite brutal.
FX on Hulu has released the first trailer for its live-action adaptation of Y: The Last Man. It offers a taste of Yorick’s ordeal, but this is more than just his story. His mother, Jennifer Brown, and his sister, Hero, also have major roles to play.
Ben Schnetzer portrays Yorick, with Olivia Thirlby as Hero. Diane Lane also headlines the series as Jennifer Brown, the woman who becomes the President when her predecessor perishes with the rest of the men. Additionally, the trailer introduces Agent 355, the woman who is assigned to track down Yorick and protect him. But that’s much easier said than done.
Diana Bang co-stars as Dr. Allison Mann, with Juliana Canfield as Beth DeVille, Marin Ireland as Nora Brady, and Amber Tamblyn as Kimberly Cunningham. According to FX on Hulu, the show “follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.”
FX began developing Y: The Last Man as a series in 2015, but a number of setbacks plagued the show’s production schedule. Showrunners came and went over creative differences. Even the original leading man, Barry Keoghan, was forced to drop out, which ultimately put Schnetzer in the role of Yorick.
Now, Eliza Clark is in place as the showrunner and executive producer, alongside Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Louise Friedberg, and Melina Matsoukas. Vaughan will also serve as an executive producer.
Y: The Last Man‘s 10-episode first season will premiere on FX on Hulu on Monday, September 13.
