Apple’s Back To School promotion returns, and look at what students will be getting for free

Last year, we wrote that Back To School promotions seem to come earlier every year, and that was in July. This year, many students are just barely out of school and Apple is already kicking off its Back To School promotion.

As it did last year, Apple is throwing in free Beats headphones with select purchases. Unlike last year, however, it isn’t limiting the promotion to Macs — the promotion also extends to iPads and iPhones, though what you get will depend on what you’re buying.

Macs included in the promotion are the iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Pro, all of which are also eligible for education pricing. Any of these will nab students a free pair of Beats Solo2 Wireless headphones, which are available in a wide range of colors and normally retail for $300.

For students buying either an iPad Pro or an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, or iPhone 6s Plus, a pair of Beats Powerbeats2 wireless headphones will be included. Like the Solo2 Wireless, these headphones are available in multiple colors, though the retail price is lower at $200.

Offering up free headphones isn’t the only thing Apple is doing to get students invested in its ecosystem. Last month the company introduced a new option for Apple Music, offering subscriptions to the music streaming for just $5 per month — half the price of a standard subscription. This discounted price is available for up to four years, and the subscriptions don’t need to be continuous, so students can take a break and still have access to the discounted price when they return to their studies.

The promotion kicked off today and will run until September 5, so there is plenty of time to make up your mind on which offer is most enticing. For more details or to get started shopping, see the Apple website.

How to download music and podcasts from Spotify: The downloads folder.

If you're a Spotify Premium user paying that premium Spotify fee, chances are you've taken at least some time curating playlists, liking songs, and using the platform's easy-to-use (and recently revamped) user interface to discover new and old music.

But sometimes all that music or your favorite podcasts aren't available if you find yourself without an internet connection to stream them from — like on a long plane ride or weekend camping trip in the sticks. That's where Spotify's offline listening feature comes in handy, allowing you to download playlists, albums, and podcasts through its desktop and mobile apps so you can still rock out while you're off the grid.

How to switch from Spotify to Apple Music
Spotify and Apple Music transfer on a smartphone.

Spotify is the world's most popular music streaming service for a reason. It has a massive catalog of music and podcasts, is full of cool music discovery and sharing features, and is really easy to use.
However, with its recent price increase and the fact that it still hasn't joined most of its peers in offering a hi-res audio quality option, you may be considering jumping ship for its closest competitor, Apple Music, which counts lossless hi-res tracks, mind-bending spatial audio, Dolby Atmos Music tracks, and a catalog that rivals Spotify's among the many attractive reasons to switch.

But there's one problem: you’ve spent a lot of time creating playlists and marking songs and albums as your favorites in Spotify. Is it worth the switch? Will all that hard work be lost in translation?
