Ed Sheeran and Eminem now have something in common. Apart from being human males in the music business, both artists have reached two billion streams on Spotify, the music service that claims 60 million users. For the 24 year-old British singer/songwriter who has just two LPs under his belt, it’s more than just another statistic. While his friend Taylor Swift has publicly removed her music from the streaming service, Sheeran is taking Spotify straight to the bank.

“I’m playing sold-out gigs in South America, I’ve sold out arenas in Korea and south-east Asia,” Sheeran said at the BBC Music Awards last year. “I don’t think I’d be able to do that without Spotify. For me, Spotify is not even a necessary evil. It helps me do what I want to do.”

Since breaking out in 2012 after the success of his debut record +, Sheeran has opened for Taylor Swift, performed with Elton John at the Grammys, won British Album of the Year, and toured the globe. It’s certainly a dream come true for a kid who was doing open mics in LA in 2010.

Passing the music streaming landmark comes after Sheeran took the title of most-played artist on Spotify in 2014. Spotify users accounted for 860 million streams for Sheeran last year. His sophomore album, x, released was a big part of that success, accounting for half of last year’s streams at 430 million.

American audiences have helped the boyish heartthrob reach the two billion mark, indicated by the fact that Sheeran has sold out most of his North American summer 2015 stadium tour. He has since announced more fall North American stops. Also on the horizon for Sheeran is a performance at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards alongside Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Meghan Trainor.

The tvOS 17.2 update is now available with redesigned TV app
Apple TV tvOS 17.2 update screen.

It's update day in Apple land. And in addition to the new hotness that is iOS 17.2 for phones and tablets, and MacOS 14.2 Sonoma for, uh, Macs, we also have tvOS 17.2 for Apple TV.

We've been running the beta track for a little while now and already have talked about updates to the sidebar in the TV app, as well as new functionality for the Siri button on the remote control. And they're still there, which is good.

One of the messier pieces of the Apple TV experience on Apple TV 4K hardware has long been Apple's TV app. It's where Apple has attempted to aggregate all the things you can watch on your Apple TV, from Apple TV+ to any number of installed applications. (Another seriously messy piece is the myriad things Apple has named "Apple TV." But that's another problem for another time.)

Spotify adds subscribers, still hasn’t added high-res audio
Spotify on an iPhone.

Spotify today announced its third-quarter 2023 earnings, and with it came news of an increase in subscribers year over year, as well as for the quarter. But still MIA is any sort of high-resolution audio, despite recent (and persistent) rumors.

"It was a truly stellar quarter," CEO Daniel Ek said on the company's earnings call, shortly after it was announced that the streaming music service reached 574 million monthly active users, up just 4% for the quarter, but 26% year over year. Premium subscribers now total 226 million, up 16% year over year and 3% for the quarter.
