Spotify brings on music maven Troy Carter to battle rival streamers

Spotify may lead rival streaming services with its 30 million paying subscribers (as of March), but staying ahead of Apple Music and Tidal is not a given, and the company seems well aware of that. The streamer has now brought on Troy Carter — a music manager who has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga, John Legend, Meghan Trainor, and more — as global head of creative services.

Hits Double Daily first reported rumors of the high-profile hire, with Spotify confirming the news on Monday, according to Recode. In his new position, Carter will work with musicians to secure exclusive artist content and be involved in original content creation. With his track record of success and talent management, he seems ideally suited to the position. Plus, the streamer must be drooling over the mere idea of a Lady Gaga Spotify exclusive.

Exclusive content has become more and more common for streaming services. Kanye West’s most recent album, The Life of Pablo, for example, started out as a Tidal exclusive, while Drake’s Views was initially only available on Apple Music. Spotify clearly wants to secure similar deals, and getting a music industry insider on board is an important step.

Carter posted some thoughts about this career move on his Facebook page Monday afternoon. “I’m a firm believer that Spotify is the future for music,” he wrote. “In my new role as Global Head of Creative Services, my job is just a natural continuation of what I’ve always done – protect the voice of artists. Always have and always will.”

The post clearly conveyed Carter’s support for artists, passion for music, and enthusiasm for Spotify, so now it just remains to be seen what he is able to cook up with those ingredients.

Spotify tweaks search functionality to make music discovery more convenient

As a streaming service, Spotify hangs its hat on music discovery, but until recently, its search functionality had made the process a bit more cumbersome than it needed to be. Fortunately, the company will soon release a small tweak that places search filters at the top of the page (just below the search bar), allowing users to easily switch back and forth between artist, song, playlist, and album searches.

Previously, people needed to scroll down below their search results to apply these filters, a process that was confusing to some and irksome to others.

Spotify Car Thing

Spotify's Car Thing, a gadget that lets users access the company's streaming music offering in a driver-friendly format, is finally a product regular Spotify Premium subscribers have a chance of getting their hands on.  As part of the device's formal launch, subscribers can sign up to get one, and, remarkably, Spotify is discounting the entire $80 price, asking that eligible customers only pay the $7 shipping charge.

What exactly is Car Thing? It's a device that Spotify has been working on for a few years, using early prototypes to understand how its customers interact with Spotify's streaming audio content while in their cars. The version that the company has just released looks like a smartphone with a large rotating knob attached to the front of the display.

How to download music from Spotify for offline listening
How to download music and podcasts from Spotify: The downloads folder.

If you're a Spotify Premium user paying that premium Spotify fee, chances are you've taken at least some time curating playlists, liking songs, and using the platform's easy-to-use (and recently revamped) user interface to discover new and old music.

But sometimes all that music or your favorite podcasts aren't available if you find yourself without an internet connection to stream them from — like on a long plane ride or weekend camping trip in the sticks. That's where Spotify's offline listening feature comes in handy, allowing you to download playlists, albums, and podcasts through its desktop and mobile apps so you can still rock out while you're off the grid.
