Want free Spotify? Buy a Tesla. It’s the least the car company could do for you after having you shell out at least $70,000 for a Model S. But wait, let me clarify: You’ll only be privy to the Spotify Premium integration if you live in Europe, Australia, or Hong Kong, and the music service will only work inside the car. You really can’t have it all.
The new partnership between Tesla and Spotify replaces the one the car company held previously with Rdio. But since Rdio’s abrupt bankruptcy last month, Tesla has been forced to turn to other providers in order to get their drivers the sweet tunes they need while hitting the road. So now, Spotify Premium comes standard with any Model S Tesla entertainment system. Just look at it this way: You’re saving $10 a month, which means that in just under six centuries, you could make all that money on your car back!
All joking aside, the relationship between the two companies certainly represents a joining of two pretty pivotal and influential forces in their respective fields. “Car radios have changed very little since the first FM radio was fitted over 60 years ago. Until now,” said Jonathan Tarlton, Spotify’s senior manager for automotive business development. “This best-in-class, seamless integration represents the future of all music and content consumption in the car, with the best part being that tens of thousands of Tesla customers around the world can already experience that future today.”
If you already have a Spotify account, you can link it directly to your Tesla and immediately listen to your favorite playlists, stations, and more. The integration allows drivers to choose any one of the 30 million songs in Spotify’s database, all by way of voice search or the touch screen on the car’s dashboard.
“This is a very important focus for us and a key strategy and you can expect many more exciting announcements from us in this sphere,” Tarlton added. So don’t worry, U.S. drivers, you’ll soon be outfitted with Spotify Premium too.
