Rock-a-bye baby: The Adiva One is a smart bed that literally rocks you to sleep

Everyone knows the best way to put a baby to sleep is to rock them, but when is the last time an adult was rocked to sleep? Adiva, a smart sleep science company, believes that a gentle rolling motion might be the key to getting the best sleep of your life. They’re putting that to the test with the Adiva One, a set of modular bed legs that can be attached to any standard frame. The legs move in a pattern to give the bed a gentle rocking motion while you sleep.

Adiva cites research that found an oscillatory motion improved the length and quality of sleep of participants in the study. As science discovers more links between overall physical and mental health and the quality of sleep you receive each night, it’s more important than ever to find a way to welcome the sandman in a way that works for you.

In addition to the modular legs, the Adiva One includes a control unit that synchronizes the motion and links the bed to the internet for updates. The bed can be controlled through an included remote, via a smartphone app, or through the Amazon Alexa. The app gives users a visual representation of how they sleep at night and allows them to see how their patterns change over time.

Two included motion sensors clip to the mattress to provide integrated sleep tracking. The artificial intelligence that powers the system will automatically adjust the speed and intensity of the motion to keep the user in deep sleep cycles.

The Adiva One is built of durable materials and can support a weight of up to 1,000 kilograms, or 2,200 pounds. Despite this, Adiva says installation and assembly is easy and requires no expert help. The Adiva One also consumes minimal power, with the largest size requiring less than 50 watts.

The Adiva One is available through Indiegogo for a starting price of $1,499, with an estimated full retail price of $2,999. However, as always, keep in mind that pledging or donating to a crowd-funded project is not a guarantee of delivery.

Why you need a smart carbon monoxide detector over a traditional one
Nest Protect

The changing of the seasons means it's time to turn on the heat. Autumn and winter bring with them the promise of hot chocolate, cozy nights around the fireplace, and your annual Christmas movie binge watch. But there's a potential threat also lurks: Carbon monoxide.

Although carbon monoxide is a threat year-round, it's more common in the cooler months due to people turning on their furnaces, boilers, and gas and wood-burning fireplaces. Carbon monoxide is the result of an incomplete combustion; in other words, if something doesn't fully burn (and by "fully," we mean a complete chemical reaction), carbon monoxide can be produced.

You might be right -- some materials cool more quickly or retain the flavor of previous drinks, even after they're washed. The Glowstone Smart Mug 2 is made out of fine bone china, which means it doesn't absorb the odor or aroma of other beverages. Your coffee or tea will taste exactly as it's supposed to, at exactly the temperature it's supposed to be. And best of all, it glows to let you know it's warm.

The mug keeps your drink at exactly 145 degrees Fahrenheit for up to an hour. When the mug reaches the ideal temperature, it starts to glow. Sleep Number’s beds have more value than the phone in your pocket. Here’s why.
Sleep Number smart bed in a bedroom.

Right after college, I ended up moving in with a roommate and had to look for a bed for the new apartment I called home. After shopping around and doing my research, I ultimately ended up buying a futon of all things -- mainly for the convenience of converting it from a couch to a bed and back again. Fast-forward a couple more years, and I was paying $500 for a queen mattress. That whole experience convinced me that it would be a waste of money to pay more than $500. I was wrong.

It’s funny how things go because I believed that $1,000 beds didn’t hold the same value as, say, a top-of-the-line smartphone. I’m referring to the Apple iPhone 12 Pros of the world -- in addition to everything else out there that starts at $1,000. That’s a little less than what you’d pay for a queen-size Sleep Number smart bed. But after trying one out for the last couple of months, I’ve become a firm believer that this bed holds more value than a smartphone. Allow me to explain.
The power of a good night’s sleep
Smartphones are incredibly powerful, but we spend a lot of time in our beds -- and it’s not just sleeping I’m talking about. Factor in activities such as watching TV, the unwinding time getting acquainted in bed before sleeping, and yes, all those naps, and the time adds up, which is how I’m able to fully understand the value of a bed. A queen-size Sleep Number 360 i8 Smart Bed comes in at more than $3,000. It’s part of Sleep Number’s Innovation Series, which features pressure-relieving comfort layers as well as a breathable fabric that better absorbs excess heat, so you can sleep cooler. The queen-size version of the Sleep Number 360 C2 Smart Bed is priced lower at $1,200 but still has the most notable feature that makes Sleep Number beds fantastic -- the ability to customize the firmness.
