Explosion at Foxconn Chengdu plant, two killed

Foxconn woundedMultiple sources are reporting an explosion at Foxconn’s Chengdu manufacturing plant has left a handful of employees injured and two killed. Chinese publication MIC Gadget says that a blast at approximately 7 pm local time in the plant’s polishing workshop injured 16 workers. Three are listed as seriously injured, and two are reported dead. The area is being evacuated and there are warnings of toxic smoke. The cause has not been identified although “human factors” have been ruled out.

Foxconn sent Gizmodo the following statement:

We can confirm that at approximately 7 pm on May 20, there was an explosion at our Chengdu campus. At this point, we can also confirm that there were two fatalities with injuries to 16 other employees. We are working with medical officials to provide treatment to the injured employees and we are working with government and law enforcement officials to contact the families of all employees affected by this tragedy.

The situation has been brought under control by the fire department and the cause of this explosion is being investigated by local police officials. Foxconn is cooperating fully with that investigation.

Production has been suspended at the site of the explosion until the completion of the investigation. The safety of our employees is our highest priority and we will do whatever is required to determine and address the cause of this tragic accident.

Foxconn is becoming increasingly synonymous with tragedy. The production facility, perhaps best known for its Apple production line, has been tied to a string of employee suicides as well as rampant reports of horrific working conditions. The building the explosion was in was reportedly responsible for iPad 2 production.

While the tragedy of the explosion will hopefully be measured in the toll of human life, it will also likely have the consequence of leading to a supply shortage for the tablet that is already experiencing escalating prices and growing demand in China.

Apple’s iOS 15.3 update fixes critical Safari security bug
iPhone showing Home Screen with widgets resting on soft white cloth background.

Apple has just released iOS 15.3, and while this latest update doesn’t add any significant new features, it addresses at least one critical security flaw. Earlier this month, software engineer Martin Bajanik of FingerprintJS found a serious vulnerability in Safari 15, the browser included in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, that could leak browsing history information and even credentials from online services that a person is using, such as Google, YouTube, Amazon, and sites using WordPress.

As Bajanik explains, many websites use an API called IndexedDB to request that browsers like Safari and Chrome store information in a local database on a person’s device. Under normal circumstances, a given website should only be able to request information about the databases that it created — any others should be invisible to it.

Apple’s 2022 iPad will keep old design with 5G and A14 chip
The iPad 10.2 on a table.

A new entry-level iPad is coming later this year, and might possibly be unveiled alongside the iPhone 14 series. According to Dylan (@dylandkt), the 10th-gen iPad is slated for an official introduction towards the end of 2022. So, what’s changing this time around? Not much, actually.

Potential buyers are in line for the customary generation-over-generation chip upgrade. In this case, the silicon upgrade is still lagging by a whole generation. The 2022 iPad refresh will reportedly come equipped with an A14 Bionic chip. The 6th-gen iPad Mini that came out last year offers the faster A15 Bionic processor, the same system on a chip that also serves as the brains inside the iPhone 13 series phones.

iPad Air 5 getting upgraded camera, chip, and 5G in 2022
Fifth generation Apple iPad Air.

Apple is reportedly eyeing an early 2022 release for the fifth-generation iPad Air, with some attractive upgrades such as 5G support and faster silicon at its heart. As per a report from Japanese blog Macotakara that cites reliable sources, the iPad Air 5 might arrive alongside the iPhone SE refresh in spring 2022.

Let’s start with the unsurprisingly disappointing part first. The iPad Air 5 is said to carry the same design as its predecessor that hit the shelves late in 2020. It arrived with an iPad Pro-esque design makeover back then. And given Apple’s love for using the same fundamental design for at least a couple of generations, an unchanged aesthetic profile for the upcoming iPad Air 5 is not at all shocking. But hey, at least buyers won’t be limited to boring shades like gray or silver, if the previous iPad Air is anything to go by. However, it’s unclear if Apple is adding any shades to the mix this year.
Same looks, meaningful improvements
