Devolver Digital’s Fall Guys is one of PS Plus’ free games in August

The new battle royale from Mediatonic and Devolver Digital will join Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered in PS Plus in August, which will also mark the release of the game.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout stays away from the “gotta kill ’em all” mentality that dominates nearly every other battle royale, and taps into the fun world of TV game shows. Players must survive multiple rounds of wacky games, either by qualifying in a certain percentile or defying elimination until one contestant is left standing.

For example, one such game is Tail Tag, where half of the contestants start with a tail and the other half do not; the objective being to steal a tail and make sure to end the round with one. Or Whirlygig, where contestants race to the finish line across a track that has spinning floors and giant fans to knock them off course.

The game seems to wish to emulate the success that Rocket League had in 2015 when it first launched, that game also being free for PSN users for a month. It worked astoundingly well for Psyonix, and with similarly colorful and light-hearted aesthetic of Fall Guys, it’s safe to say it might work the same magic for Mediatonic.

Fall Guys is already off to an impressive start, however. Over the weekend, the game had its biggest technical beta to date, which removed NDA restrictions and allowed people to stream and share their gameplay. The game for most of the beta’s run was the highest-viewed game on Twitch, which lead to the game enjoying the sixth slot on Steam’s sales charts.

Last year at E3, Devolver Digital showed me into a room hidden from the rest of the outdoor space they annually occupy across the street from the LA Convention Center. I had an appointment for a game they had yet to announce. I stepped into a giant container filled with colorful inflatable furniture and decorations.

I sat down to play Fall Guys, and I was immediately enraptured. I knew that Devolver Digital and Mediatonic had something special on their hands. My suspicions were confirmed when the game had its first public hands-on at PAX East this year, and it was easily one of the most packed booths on the floor.

Now, with its gigantic beta weekend, and becoming free for PSN users on August 4, Fall Guys might become one of the biggest games of the year. The game will also launch on PC, although not for free, on the same date.

A Sonic game that plays like Fall Guys is coming to mobile
A cinematic shot of Sonic in Sonic Rumble's announcement trailer.

Sega unveiled a new Sonic the Hedgehog game today, and it's a multiplayer game for mobile devices that's reminiscent of battle royale platformers like Fall Guys.

Titled Sonic Rumble, this battle royale game sees 32 players compete as they dash and jump their way through levels. Mediatonic's Fall Guys is the most immediate comparison to draw based on the gameplay briefly shown off in its reveal trailer, but Sonic Rumble does stand out with levels that feel uniquely tailored to the series' iconography and 2D platformer sections that call back to Sonic's roots. A lot of Sonic the Hedgehog characters appear to be playable and can be further customized with in-game items.

3 underrated PS Plus games you should play this weekend (May 3-5)
The main character of Tales of Kenzera: Zau stands with two elemental items.

PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra have been around for almost two years, and during that time the subscription service has established itself as an ample competitor to Xbox Game Pass. That means there is a wealth of great games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners to check out if they're looking for something to play this weekend. I think PS Plus subscribers should be looking toward some of the more underrated games in the subscription service this weekend too.

I have three particular picks in mind. The first is an enjoyable Metroidvania that came to PS Plus' game catalog when it launched just a couple of weeks ago and deserves a lot more attention than it's getting. After that, there's an action-platformer that pays homage to series like Ninja Gaiden that you should check out before it leaves the catalog. Finally, there's a PS2-era Star Wars game that fills the niche a recently canceled game would have.

You don’t want to miss PS Plus’ great free game lineup this May
Jack holds a sword in Ghostrunner 2 key art.

A new month is upon us, so another batch of PlayStation Plus Essential's monthly free titles is nearly upon us. On May 7, four games will be available for no additional cost to PS Plus Essential subscribers: EA Sports FC 24, Ghostrunner 2, Tunic, and Destiny 2: Lightfall.

EA Sports FC 24 is the latest soccer game to come from the EA Sports brand. Historically, this series was known as FIFA, but EA had to rebrand it after its partnership with that organization ended. Despite that, EA Sports FC 24 is still very much an iteration of FIFA 23, so if you enjoy soccer games and don't already own EA Sports FC 24, it's worth a download. Next is Ghostrunner II, a thrilling first-person action game that launched last October. It's the kind of game that makes you feel like a badass as you precisely platform and strike enemies before they can kill you in one hit.
