HBO Max wades into the streaming wars on May 27

You’ll be able to binge-watch another streaming service when HBO Max finally joins the streaming world on May 27.

The streaming service will reportedly have 10,000 hours of content at its launch. Expect to find cult favorites like Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Big Bang Theory, South Park, Doctor Who, Adventure Time, The OC, and more.

Veep, Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, and Barry will also be available to stream via HBO Max.

As far as movies go, all 21 of Studio Ghibli’s animated features will stream exclusively on HBO Max. You can also expect 2001: A Space Odyssey, Casablanca, The Dark Knight, The Matrix Trilogy, and The Wizard of Oz, as well as all DC films from the past decade.

HBO Max will cost $15 a month, which makes it more expensive than the other streaming services. However, given the amount of extra content HBO Max has, and the fact that HBO currently costs about $15 through cable providers or HBO Now, the higher price makes sense.

If you already have HBO Now, you’ll get access to HBO Max at no extra cost. AT&T customers who are already subscribed to HBO will also get HBO Max for free.

Like other streaming services, HBO Max will also have its own original content, including the scripted comedy Love Life starring Anna Kendrick, and an underground ballroom dance competition series called Legendary. Among other original series confirmed for HBO Max are the revival series Grease: Rydell High, the Cristin Milioti-led comedy series Made for Love, and the limited series Station Eleven, starring Mackenzie Davis.

An exclusive Friends reunion featuring all six original cast members was set to debut on HBO Max in May, but that project has since been pushed back due to the coronavirus outbreak.

HBO Max joins the very crowded streaming space, which includes players like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Disney+, as well as NBC Universal’s Peacock.

Netflix, which is the most popular streaming service, currently has more than 60 million paid subscribers in the U.S., according to its 2019 third-quarter report. Disney+ hit the 50 million paid subscriber mark just five months after joining the streaming world. Disney-owned Hulu has claimed more than 28 million subscribers.

If you have to watch one Disney+ movie this May, stream this one

Disney+ subscribers have almost certainly noticed by now that this month's selection of new movies is abysmal if you don't also have a Hulu subscription. While Disney CEO Bob Iger recently crowed to investors that Disney+ is now profitable, he neglected to mention that the streamer only achieved that status because the programming has been severely cut. Unless you really love documentaries about The Beatles, Queen, The Beach Boys, or Jim Henson, there are literally no other new movies on Disney+ in May beyond the offerings from Hulu.

Because of the Hulu integration, it's now even harder to find a movie on Disney+ (outside of the major Disney brands) that you can actually watch with the original subscription that you paid for. That's something Disney+ subscribers should be very upset about. But even with these misguided content decisions, if you have to watch one Disney+ movie this May, then the film to stream is a 2006 romantic comedy/fantasy called Aquamarine, which is based on the book by Alice Hoffman. It's not actually a Disney film, but fans of The Little Mermaid may recognize certain aspects of the plot. If you're looking for reasons to watch Aquamarine, we've got a few to share.

Game of Thrones’ disappointing finale lost sight of what made the series so great

Ending a TV show well is an infamously hard thing to do. Plenty of great, talented writers have tried and failed over the years, and even more fans have been left disappointed as their favorite shows failed to stick the landing. While bad final episodes have been a part of the TV landscape for decades, no series finale in modern memory has been as universally and passionately detested as Game of Thrones'.

After entertaining millions of viewers for eight years, the HBO drama delivered a final trio of rushed, ham-fisted episodes in May 2019 that brought its story to an incredibly disappointing, unearned conclusion. The show that had long held the TV crown subsequently faded from the world's pop cultural conversations — proving that sometimes the destination is as important as the journey. Many longtime fans seemingly pushed Game of Thrones from their minds altogether, while others decided to place all their hopes for a better ending on the two remaining Song of Ice and Fire books that author George R. R. Martin still hasn't published.
