Garmin just bumped up its handheld GPSMAP line by adding an eight-megapixel flash camera and advanced geotagging capabilities. The new Garmin GPSMAP 64sc launches today, according to Garmin International. Earlier GPSMAP 64 models are rugged, water-resistant, and already suitable for a variety of activities, but the GPSMAP 64sc enables higher levels of scouting, navigating, and geotagging.

“Adding a flash camera in the GPSMAP 64sc opens up a variety of new opportunities for the GPSMAP user,” said Garmin vice president of worldwide sales Dan Bartel. “The flash plus geotagging capabilities allows users to easily scout hunting spots, navigate to different waypoints, or automatically geotag locations for professional use. Users can even use the camera flash as a flashlight, something that isn’t available on other 64 series units.”

Unique to this model, the GPSMAP 64sc has a new 2.6-inch transflective color display readable in sunlight. The high-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS receiver has a quad helix antenna to ensure strong reception. GPS and GLONASS used together mean you can hold the signal in the woods and in canyons, plus the unit has faster signal acquisition times. Other new features include a 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass with an accelerometer and a barometric altimeter.

You can pair a cell phone with the GPSMAP 64sc to receive and read text messages and notifications on the GPS screen while your phone is in your pocket or pack.

All GPSMAP 64 models come preloaded with a worldwide shaded relief base map. They also come with a one-year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, which displays terrain on the device screen. The $400 GPSMAP 64sc, available today, has a dual battery setup good for up to 16 hours of battery life. You can use either an included rechargeable nickel-metal hydride battery pack or replaceable AA batteries.

Whether you use a GPS for hiking, hunting, geocaching, field training, or golf, the Garmin GPSMAP 64sc just added features to help you up your game.
