Skylum Luminar’s artificially intelligent photo editing tools just got a little smarter. On Thursday, April 25, Skylum Software launched Luminar 3.1.0, an update that focuses on enhancing the Accent A.I. filter as well as bringing a handful of other smaller tweaks.

The existing Accent A.I. uses machine learning to automatically adjust a photo, using the data that is in the image to make image-specific adjustments rather than treating all images identically. With the update, the A.I. behind the feature is now able to recognize people and some objects, creating better results from the streamlined tool.

By recognizing people in the image, the tool can better preserve skin tones instead of applying adjustments indiscriminately to both people, objects, and scenery, Skylum suggests. The result is a more realistic image with selective adjustments based on what the software recognizes inside the image.

“Accent A.I. has been a revolutionary tool for many photographers using Luminar, helping them to speed up their workflow and come away with truly amazing images. With this update to Accent A.I., it will assist photographers more than ever, allowing them to truly harness content-aware technology in ways never seen before,” Alex Tsepko, CEO of Skylum, said in a press release.

Alongside the update to Accent A.I., the latest version also allows photographers to pair matching files when shooting with the RAW + JPEG option to better organize photos. Users can also use an improved sync tool to apply the settings from one image to another, automatically syncing the settings but excluding layers, crop, erase, clone, and stamp edits.

When adding new images in the Windows version, users can also copy the images to a new folder on the hard drive, such as when importing directly from an SD card. Selecting images inside a gallery improves with a control-click shortcut for selecting images that aren’t adjacent to each other.

The updates tweak the Lightroom competitor with simplified workflow tools and expanded A.I.-based tools. Skylum Software is the same company behind Photolemur and Aurora HDR.

The latest version is a free update for current Luminar 3 users. The update also launches with a temporary discount on the software for new users, starting at $60, which is a $10 discount. The offer is good through May 14.

Music making is increasingly digitized here in 2020, but some analog audio effects are still very difficult to reproduce in this way. One of those effects is the kind of screeching guitar distortion favored by rock gods everywhere. Up to now, these effects, which involve guitar amplifiers, have been next to impossible to re-create digitally.

That’s now changed thanks to the work of researchers in the department of signal processing and acoustics at Finland’s Aalto University. Using deep learning artificial intelligence (A.I.), they have created a neural network for guitar distortion modeling that, for the first time, can fool blind-test listeners into thinking it’s the genuine article. Think of it like a Turing Test, cranked all the way up to a Spınal Tap-style 11.

Barnes & Noble used A.I. to make classic books more diverse. It didn’t go well

For Black History Month, Barnes & Noble created covers of classic novels with the protagonists re-imagined as people of color. Then it quickly canceled its planned Diverse Editions of 12 books, including Emma, The Secret Garden, and Frankenstein amid criticism that it clumsily altered books by mostly white authors instead of promoting writers of color. The project used artificial intelligence to scan 100 books for descriptions of major characters, and artists created covers depicting Alices, Romeos, and Captain Ahabs of various ethnicities.

"We acknowledge the voices who have expressed concerns about the Diverse Editions project at our Barnes & Noble Fifth Avenue store and have decided to suspend the initiative," Barnes & Noble announced in a statement. The company partnered with with Penguin Random House and advertising agency TBWA/CHIAT/DAY to create the books.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai warns of dangers of A.I. and calls for more regulation

Citing concerns about the rise of deepfakes and the potential abuses of facial recognition technology, Google CEO Sundar Pichai declared in an op-ed in the Financial Times that artificial intelligence should be more tightly regulated: "We need to be clear-eyed about what could go wrong" with A.I., Pichai wrote.

The Alphabet and Google executive wrote about the positive developments that A.I. can bring, such as recent work by Google finding that A.I. can detect breast cancer more accurately than doctors, or Google's project to use A.I. to more accurately predict rainfall in local areas. But he also warned that "history is full of examples of how technology’s virtues aren’t guaranteed" and that "[t]he internet made it possible to connect with anyone and get information from anywhere, but also easier for misinformation to spread."
