Instagram adds a notification center to its desktop version

Instagram has come a long way since its mobile-only days. While you still can’t access all the functionality of the popular photo editing and sharing app on your computer, you can do a whole lot more today than you could just a few years ago — and now, the latest improvement comes in the form of a desktop notification center. Because how else will you know how popular you are?

As of Tuesday, the Facebook-owned app began showing its users notifications in a drop-down menu located on the top-right corner of its desktop version. It’s the same familiar icon that you see at the bottom of the mobile app (a heart within a comment bubble), and it gives you the same sorts of updates. New favorites, followers, and comments are all displayed in the desktop-friendly format, so now, you can stay up to date on your Insta-activity no matter what device you’re on.

That said, while you can differentiate between “You” and “Following” on the mobile app’s notification center, this optionality is missing from the desktop version. So if you want to stalk your friends’ likes and followers on a larger screen, you’re out of luck. Gotta stick with the smartphone on that front.

Of course, the main functionality of Instagram (uploading, editing, and sharing photos) still remains strictly confined to the smartphone space, but perhaps this will change in the near future as well. And if nothing else, this latest change could increase usage of Instagram across platforms, which never seems like a bad idea for an app.

This is not the first time Facebook has driven one of its mobile apps to the Web — WhatsApp took on a www address last year, and messenger.com is another Facebook service that took the leap from the small screen.

So hang on to your hats, Instagram users. The app keeps improving, and there’s no telling what’s next.

Instagram now allows people to add music to feed posts in three countries
Instagram welcome screen on iPhone.

Instagram is testing a new feature in three countries that will allow people to add music to the posts they make on their feeds. If you have ever added music to your Instagram Stories or Reels, you are likely to be familiar with the process.

Instagram is currently testing the ability to add music to feed posts in India, Brazil, and Turkey. Users will be able to browse through various music clips in the “Trending” or “For You” sections. They will also be able to search for specific songs. The song title will appear on the header of the feed post. If you click on it, you will be taken to an audio page that showcases all feed posts that have used that particular song. Once a song has been selected, a user can select the clip duration and then share it on their personal profile feed.

Instagram is preparing its own subscription service
Instagram logo

Instagram seems to be going along the path of Twitter and launching a new subscription service if new listings spotted in the App Store and Play Store are to be taken as indicative. The company had previously stated that it was interested in dabbling in subscriptions, but this would be the first time concrete evidence of such a move has been seen.

Spotted by app store analysts Sensor Tower and AppTopia (via TechCrunch), Facebook has added new "Instagram subscriptions" under in-app purchases. These prices range from $1 to $5.  There's no clarity on what Instagram subscriptions would imply. Perhaps it would be something like paying creators directly for exclusive content on a month-to-month basis. Rather than creators showing off links to their content on Patreon or elsewhere, the company would enable them to mark certain images for subscribers only and then take a cut of the subscription fee. Instagram has yet to announce any such subscription at the moment.
