Quibi might be up for sale after limp launch

Short-form video streaming platform Quibi may be put up for sale after struggling to attract subscribers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Quibi is exploring a possible sale among several options under review with advisers, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The company is also thinking about raising more money after its initial $1.8 billion cash raise, or going public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company.

Quibi, an abbreviation for “quick bites,” was founded by Disney and DreamWorks alumni Jeffrey Katzenberg and led by CEO Meg Whitman, formerly of Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The service was designed to work on mobile devices, for a monthly subscription fee of $5 for ad-supported access and $8 for ad-free viewing.

The service pushed through with its launch in April despite the coronavirus outbreak, with Whitman saying in an interview with Digital Trends that it was fast-tracking the launch of TV casting support as viewers were staying at home instead of watching content on the go.

“Quibi has successfully launched a new business and pioneered a new form of storytelling and state-of-the-art platform,” a spokesperson said in a statement to Digital Trends when asked for comments on the report.

“[Whitman] and [Katzenberg] are committed to continuing to build the business in the way that gives the greatest experience for customers, greatest value for shareholders, and greatest opportunity for employees. We do not comment on rumor or speculation.”

COVID-19 blamed for Quibi’s problems

Katzenberg blamed the coronavirus outbreak for Quibi’s struggles out of the gate, though he also admitted that some of the service’s content failed to connect with audiences.

Quibi had expected 7 million viewers in its first year, a target that has since been abandoned by the company. As of June, there were 4.5 million downloads of the service’s app, with only 1.6 million subscribers.

Lord of the Rings gaming and movie rights are up for sale

The gaming, movie merchandising, and live event rights for The Lord of the Rings franchise are up for sale, Variety reports. 
Zaentz Co. currently holds the rights to these Lord of the Rings rights, and it is selling them with the help of ACF Investment Bank. Variety claims that these rights could be worth up to $2 billion to the right buyer. 

As for potential buyers, Variety theorized that Amazon may be a suitor because of its upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Amazon Prime television series. It would also be a compelling franchise for Amazon Game Studios to have at its disposal. Amazon previously canceled a Lord of the Rings MMO, so we wouldn't be surprised if it returned to the idea if it owned the IP rights.
Daedalic Entertainment is currently working on a game starring Gollum, though it's doubtful it could afford to buy the rights. 
Warner Bros. is also a potential buyer. It produced the popular Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film series, and WB Games has also developed several titles set in that world, including Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The developer of those games is now working on a Wonder Woman game, and Variety reports that WB lost exclusive film rights last year. As such, its interest in acquiring these rights is questionable.
This deal is significant as it will play an important role in the future in terms of of what video games and films based on this franchise come out. Fans of The Lord of the Rings should keep an eye on the results of this sale.

Recent rumors indicated that Microsoft's next-generation Hololens 3 mixed reality headset could be dead, but now there's a chance that might not be true at all. In a tweet, Alex Kipman, who invented HoloLens and is currently a technical fellow at Microsoft, seemed to indicate that the product could still be alive.

As a recap, the whole saga started after a Business Insider report revealed the state of internal disarray and uncertainty within the HoloLens Team. The report also indicated that Microsoft could be working with Samsung on a next-generation headset, and HoloLens 3 was canceled in the middle of last year when that project began. Kipman, though, says not to "believe what you read on the internet," and that "HoloLens is doing great."
