You can now track Facebook Graph Searches on Google Analytics

Facebook has been promising a lot of new features – from Graph Search to the new timeline – and we’re getting tired of waiting for all the goodness to roll out to everyone. A lot of people have been getting access to Graph Search, but not everyone knows exactly how it works. Those that do know – like G-Squared Interactive’s Glenn Gabe – have uncovered something quite useful: Facebook has apparently been handing off keyword data within their own referral strings.

What does it all mean? First, a little history: In October 2011, Google announced that it would be increasing efforts in making searches more secure, and because of this, the keywords that were searched by users would not be passed in the referrer when they visited your website – meaning, you won’t get credit for it when you check out your analytics. Many have been experiencing problems because of this.

graph-searchHere’s where Facebook Graph Search comes into play. Think of it as Facebook’s own Google Search, which provides users the results they want within Facebook, including ones that take them out of the social networking site (it comes with a gray globe and magnifying glass icon, appearing last on the list).  Imagine searching something on Facebook and having it return keyword data to the sites they point to. That type of functionality will benefit not only the users, but also business owners, advertisers, SEOs, and webmasters by enabling them to track their impact within Facebook, which Gabe details in a blog post about his discovery.

Anybody handy with Google Analytics knows that Facebook isn’t exactly considered a search engine, and if you tried tracking Graph Searches as is in your analytics account, it will still show up as a referring site sans the keyword.  However, thanks to Gabe’s observation, there’s a way you can set up a new profile to add a filter that will log Facebook Graph Searches – and should Graph Search reach the heights Facebook intends it to, then site owners out there should be thrilled about the fact they can track this traffic.  You can follow Gabe’s step-by-step procedure to set up a filter to track this data here.

The World Health Organization (WHO) organized a meeting that brought together the likes of Facebook, Amazon, and Google, with the goal of stopping the spread of misinformation about the new coronavirus, officially called COVID-19.

The meeting was hosted by Facebook at its Menlo Park, California campus, CNBC reported, citing a spokesperson for the social media company. Other companies represented at the meeting include Airbnb, Dropbox, Kinsa, Mapbox, Salesforce, Twilio, Twitter, Verizon, and YouTube, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter. Apple, Lyft, and Uber were given invitations, but did not send representatives.

Facebook on Monday announced a new feature that will begin rolling out in Ireland before spreading elsewhere: The ability to transfer your Facebook photos directly to other platforms without having to download them first. The feature will initially only port your pics over to Google Photos, though it's likely more platforms are on the way.

This is a step forward from Facebook's already-existing data portability tool, “Download Your Information,” which allows a user to keep a copy of everything they’ve ever put on Facebook on their private computer. In a statement, Facebook told Digital Trends that “the feedback we’ve received over the years tells us that although this tool is helpful, it isn’t seamless enough for users to take information directly from one service to another.”

You will soon be able to migrate your Facebook photos and videos to Google Photos

Facebook will soon let you easily migrate those hundreds of old photos and videos you uploaded ages ago to other services like Google Photos. In a blog post, the social network said it’s rolling out a new tool in Ireland that allows you to port your Facebook media without having to manually download and upload it someplace else.

The announcement is the result of Facebook’s participation in the Data Transfer Project, an open-source initiative to enable cross-platform data migration between various platforms. Facebook has been a member of the project for a while along with Apple, Google, Twitter, and more. Incidentally, the tools that allow you to download all your Facebook or Google data were based on the code developed through the Data Transfer Project as well.
