Amazfit’s new $179 smartwatches are here to take on the established players

Amazfit has launched two new smartwatches, the Amazfit GTR 2 and GTS 2 in the U.S. and the U.K.. The sequels to last year’s GTR and GTS smartwatches, the focus is once again on fitness and design, but the price undercuts many smartwatch competitors as each of them costs just $179.

The Amazfit GTS 2 has an oblong, Apple Watch-style design with an always-on 1.65-inch AMOLED screen on the front, while the GTR 2 has a round 1.39-inch face with the same always-on AMOLED technology. Both designs have been given an update. Take a look at the button guards around the crown on the GTS 2, for example, which gives it a cleaner, more mature look.

The round GTR 2 has a pair of buttons on the case, and an attractive curved case. Amazfit has used aluminum for the cases, and attached either a leather or silicone strap. We reviewed the Amazfit GTS last year, and were impressed with the build quality and the screen, but noted the software wasn’t as polished as it should be. We’re hoping the software has been given an overhaul, too.

On the health side, both have heart rate monitors on the back, and a blood oxygen (SpO2) sensor, too. Amazfit’s SpO2 measurements are taken periodically through the day, but also work with the watch’s sleep tracking, helping to understand any breathing issues at night. In addition, both watches have GPS and water resistance to 50 meters, along with 12 different workout tracking modes. Data is collected and shown in the Amazfit app, which is available for both Android and iOS.

Other features include the ability to receive calls, something that’s new for this series of watches, and 4GB of internal storage space for your music. Just because there’s no Google Assistant onboard — the watches use Amazfit’s own software, not Wear OS — don’t think there isn’t a virtual assistant, as Amazon’s Alexa is built-in instead. Battery life is expected to be between seven and 14 days, depending on your use.

The Amazfit GTR 2 and GTS 2 are already available in China, and this announcement is for the global versions of the two watches. The $179 GTR 2 will be

available on October 30 through Amazon

and Amazfit’s own online store, and the $179 GTS 2 will follow on November 1.

Honor pulls its new MagicWatch 2 smartwatch out of a hat
honor magicwatch 2 news 46mm

Honor has launched the Honor MagicWatch 2, following a selection of teasers about the smartwatch, and whether it's really magical to you may depend on if you've seen the Huawei Watch GT2, as the heritage is very clear. There are two versions, a 46mm model and a 42mm model, and both are made from 361L stainless steel. They available in four different colors -- agate black and sakura gold for the 42mm MagicWatch, and flax brown and charcoal black for the 46mm watch, and have interchangeable straps.

There are some design differences between the two watches, which we'd had hints about after seeing some design drawings of the MagicWatch 2. The 46mm model, apart from being bigger and therefore suited to those who either have larger wrists or like a bolder watch design, has a sporty chronograph look. The 42mm model is simpler and smaller, and although the sakura gold version is obviously aimed at women, the black 42mm MagicWatch 2 looks suitably unisex.

Razer Anzu smart glasses deal knocks $140 off the price tag
The Razer Anzu smart glasses placed on top of an open book.

While smartwatch deals have slowly claimed their place in the mainstream, smart glasses haven't turned out to be as popular. Gaming-focused brand Razer, however, is trying to renew interest in smart glasses with the Razer Anzu, which you can currently purchase from Best Buy at $140 off. If you'd like to give them a try, they're available for just $60, less than half their original price of $200.

There have been failures like the Google Glass and Snap Spectacles, and hopeful attempts like Oppo's Air Glass and Apple's secretive project, but the Razer Anzu smart glasses take a different spin on the wearable device by designing them for indoors. While they come with polarized sunglass lenses, their clear lenses are more useful with their blue light filter, which protects your eyes from screen glare to prevent discomfort even after hours of playing video games or working from home. The smart glasses, which also have a built-in omnidirectional microphone and speakers, may also be more comfortable to wear for an extended period of time compared to headsets and headphones. You'll enjoy smooth, stutter-free sound with the Razer Anzu's low latency audio with a 60ms Bluetooth connection.
