This cool circular smartwatch runs Android, isn’t ugly, and may cost only $100

Smartwatches that run a full version of Android haven’t been especially inspiring, particularly since Android Wear has been adopted by companies such as Fossil and TAG Heuer, and installed on watches we actually want to have on our wrist. However, a Chinese brand, Bluboo, may be ready to make ugly Android watches a thing of the past, if this early look at the Xwatch is representative of the final product.

The Xwatch looks great, with a large 1.3-inch circular screen, a selection of buttons, a metal body, fun interchangeable bezels, and what looks like an easily replaceable strap. That’s a recipe for success on its own, but it’s further augmented by apparently being a sensible 9.8mm thick, and having a big 480mAh battery inside. For comparison, the LG Watch Urbane is nearly 11m thick, and has a 410mAh battery — currently one of the largest inside an Android Wear watch.

The Xwatch isn’t listed on Bluboo’s website, but has been discussed on its blog, where further specs are revealed. These include 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, a 360 x 360 pixel screen resolution, and a MediaTek processor. Bluboo’s hinting the Xwatch may be waterproof and shock resistant too. That’s all sounding positive, but it gets better. According to GizChina, the XWatch will cost just $100. That’s less than half the price of most Android Wear smartwatches we see at the moment.

There is a slight discrepancy which will have to be cleared up in the future. Bluboo’s site claims Android Wear is onboard, while the more recent GizChina report says it’s full Android — just like on your phone — which the images seem to support. There’s no indication it’ll act as a full phone-on-your-wrist, and no talk of a SIM card slot. We’ll find out when the watch goes on sale, which both sources seem to agree will be sometime in February.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen a smartwatch from Bluboo. The Uwatch was revealed back in November last year, but came with a square face, and ran Android Wear. Again the price was low, with the quoted cost a mere $50. The Uwatch didn’t get us all that excited outside of that price tag, but the Xwatch looks the part and still manages to be wallet friendly. We’ll let you know when it goes on sale.

The new TicWatch Pro S smartwatch isn’t really new at all

The TicWatch Pro S is the latest Wear OS smartwatch from Mobvoi, and although it’s being announced in 2021, it is not a major upgrade over the TicWatch Pro 2020 model it replaces in the range. Perhaps most surprisingly, it doesn’t have the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor inside -- the staple of almost all smartwatches today -- but nor does it have the newer Snapdragon Wear 4100 chip, either. Instead, it has the Snapdragon Wear 2100, a processor released in 2016.

It’s the same chip running the TicWatch Pro 2020, and the 2018 TicWatch Pro before it and that’s not the only similarity. The TicWatch Pro S uses Mobvoi’s innovative dual-screen system to increase battery life, with a simple FSTN screen taking over always-on display duties from the 1.38-inch, 400 x 400 pixel AMOLED screen. It also has 1GB of RAM, GPS, and a 415mAh battery. It’s just as tough too, with the smartwatch meeting the MIL-STD-810G standard to withstand shock, sand, dust, and varying temperatures, plus it has an IP68 water resistance rating.

Fitbit Ionic smartwatch users need to stop using their devices right now. The company has recalled its Ionic wearable after over 150 reports of the watch’s lithium-ion battery overheating, and 78 reports of burn injuries to the users. It will offer a refund of $299 to the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch users who return the device.

Fitbit has received at least 115 reports in the United States and over 50 reports internationally about the Ionic smartwatch's battery overheating. It is recalling the device as there are two reports of third-degree burns and four reports of second-degree burns out of the 78 total burn injuries report.
