Fossil unveils its first Android Wear watch with Intel inside and a flat-tire display

The Intel Developer Conference is taking place this week and Fossil was on hand with a surprise. The company showed off three wearable devices, and the one that’s grabbing the most attention is an Android Wear watch.

Unfortunately not much was revealed about the watch, but we do know that an Intel chip is powering it. It was back in May that Intel announced a partnership with Tag Heuer for a future Android Wear watch, but this is the first time we are seeing one powered by the company’s chip.

At first glance, it resembles a cross between the Moto 360 and the LG Watch Urbane. The smaller bezel around the display is reminiscent of the Moto 360, but the lugs for the watch strap are similar to the Watch Urbane.

You will also notice the flat tire look on the display, which is the black part of the display at the bottom. It’s exactly what you will find on the Moto 360, and the reason for it is because that space is needed for the display components. The Watch Urbane has a larger bezel around the display, so it’s not necessary.

A silver version was on display, but we won’t be surprised if a gold version is offered as well. The watch shown sported a leather strap, and it’s likely that metal bands will be offered as well. It appears that it takes 22mm straps, just like other Android Wear watches.

Other Fossil Connected Devices shown included a fitness band and some sort of semi-smart watch. Just like the Android Wear watch, not much information was shared. It’s expected that all three wearables will be out in time for the holidays.

The company also revealed that it would offer connected watches for Michael Kors and Kate Spade, but it’s not clear if they will be Android Wear.

This is the first smartwatch from a traditional watchmaker, and we can expect more. Tag Heuer could announce its Android Wear watch sometime this fall.

Short battery life is a major smartwatch pain point, and although the Oppo Watch’s 30-hour total usage time isn’t outstanding, it’s helped by the 15-minute charge window. The Oppo Watch is being pitched as a wearable with a focus on health and wellness, with sleep tracking on board. It also has an unusual five-minute workout feature, complete with voice coaching. We’ve yet to see this in action, but it sounds like a great addition to common smartwatch wellness features like breathing exercises and reminders to stand up.

Tag Heuer reimagines its beautiful, $1,800 WearOS smartwatch for 2020

Tag Heuer, the first Swiss watchmaker to embrace touchscreen smartwatches, has announced the third generation of its wearable, called simply the Tag Heuer Connected. The company has stayed with a similar design to the previous versions, but with some key alterations both inside and out to bring it up to date.

This is a luxury smartwatch, which means it’s made from high-end materials. The Connected watch comes in a choice of three polished or brushed stainless steel cases, plus one made from grade 2 Titanium, each with a fixed ceramic bezel. On the stainless steel models, this comes in either a metal or PVD black finish, while the Titanium version gets a matte black PVD bezel. (PVD, or Physical Vapor Deposition, is a process that vaporizes a number of metals, and then binds it on a surface, in layers, in a heated vaccuum.)

Fitbit Ionic smartwatch users need to stop using their devices right now. The company has recalled its Ionic wearable after over 150 reports of the watch’s lithium-ion battery overheating, and 78 reports of burn injuries to the users. It will offer a refund of $299 to the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch users who return the device.

Fitbit has received at least 115 reports in the United States and over 50 reports internationally about the Ionic smartwatch's battery overheating. It is recalling the device as there are two reports of third-degree burns and four reports of second-degree burns out of the 78 total burn injuries report.
