Fossil launches 3 hybrid smartwatches that work with your Android phone

Fossil is one of the companies that seem to have wholeheartedly embraced Android Wear — it has full Android Wear devices in the Q Founder, Q Wander, and Q Marshall — but it’s not done with smartwatches just yet. The company just launched three more “hybrid” smartwatches — watches that look and feel like standard analog watches, but which have a number of smart features under the hood.

The watches, called the Emporio Armani, Kate Spade, and the Diesel, aren’t Android Wear devices, but they do work perfectly well with your Android phone.

Let’s start with the Emporio Armani. The device comes in five different versions, with options including a stainless steel bracelet, a black bracelet, a rose gold and brown leather strap, stainless steel and blue leather strap, and a gun metal and black leather strap.

The Kate Spade watch is available in three models, including a rose gold and black leather strap, a silver with gray leather strap, and a gold with pale pink leather strap.

Last but not least is the Diesel watch, which also comes in five versions. All of the options include a stainless steel casing, with strap options including black, brown, and dark brown.

So what makes these watches so smart? Well, under the hood they can track your activity and vibrate for notifications. Not only that but the buttons on the side of the watch can perform rudimentary smart tasks, such as checking your fitness progress or remotely controlling your camera. The best part of a hybrid, however, is the battery life — since there’s no display, the watch lasts a hefty six months on a single charge.

The Kate Spade watch will be available in early 2017 for $250. Both the Diesel and the Armani are set to be released to the public later in December, however, we don’t know how much they will cost just yet.

Fossil is reimagining the hybrid smartwatch. The new Hybrid HR cleverly mixes the best part of the true hybrid -- decent battery life -- and the pull of always being able to see the time, with the convenience of clear notifications, a customizable display, and extensive fitness tracking. There are two models, separated by the size of the strap. The Collider HR comes with a 22mm strap, while the Charter HR has an 18mm strap. Both have 42mm bodies with 27mm displays, and are made from stainless steel.

The display is a low-power e-paper screen just like on your e-book reader, which shows little complications and notification alerts underneath mechanical hands. A vibration alert tells you there’s new information, while the customizable complications show heart rate, weather details, the date, and step count. Interestingly, you can turn off some or all of these complications for a sleeker, more standard watch look, and even change the background too.

Fitbit Ionic smartwatch users need to stop using their devices right now. The company has recalled its Ionic wearable after over 150 reports of the watch’s lithium-ion battery overheating, and 78 reports of burn injuries to the users. It will offer a refund of $299 to the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch users who return the device.

Fitbit has received at least 115 reports in the United States and over 50 reports internationally about the Ionic smartwatch's battery overheating. It is recalling the device as there are two reports of third-degree burns and four reports of second-degree burns out of the 78 total burn injuries report.

Razer Anzu smart glasses deal knocks $140 off the price tag

While smartwatch deals have slowly claimed their place in the mainstream, smart glasses haven't turned out to be as popular. Gaming-focused brand Razer, however, is trying to renew interest in smart glasses with the Razer Anzu, which you can currently purchase from Best Buy at $140 off. While they come with polarized sunglass lenses, their clear lenses are more useful with their blue light filter, which protects your eyes from screen glare to prevent discomfort even after hours of playing video games or working from home. The smart glasses, which also have a built-in omnidirectional microphone and speakers, may also be more comfortable to wear for an extended period of time compared to headsets and headphones.
