Tag Heuer’s new limited edition smartwatch says it’s Mario time, all the time

It’s quite literally Mario time all the time thanks to a brand tie-in few would have expected. Luxury watchmaker Tag Heuer has announced the Tag Heuer Connected X Super Mario Limited Edition smartwatch, bringing the mustachioed plumber’s image and style to one of the classiest (and most expensive) wearables you can buy.

What’s perhaps more surprising than the brand partnership itself is how seriously the two have taken it. This isn’t a halfhearted partnership, as both Tag Heuer and Nintendo have put Mario front and center, with the character’s influence running throughout the smartwatch from the color scheme of the straps and the watch face, to the design of the bezel and crown.

Most interestingly, Mario has been tied in with your daily activity. Different animations play when you reach key points towards your daily activity goal, including Mario collecting a Super Mushroom and a Super Star, which result in power-ups, and eventually, him climbing the Goal Pole most will remember from Super Mario games when you reach 100% of your daily target.

Add in an animated Mario playing tennis, golf, or another sport, and you get a motivational system that’s a lot more fun than you’d expect on a smartwatch like this. There are four custom watch dials in total to choose from, all of which are currently exclusive to this version, and integrate Mario into familiar Tag Heuer watch faces. For example, there are two versions of the Heuer 02 face, which use colors taken from Mario’s cap, or from his overalls.

The smartwatch’s case and strap have been given a Mario makeover too. You have a choice of a red and black leather strap or a red perforated rubber strap, each held together with a steel clasp featuring Mario’s M logo. The lacquered bezel has a subtle red gradient finish, and has a mushroom, pipe, and star icon at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. The lacquered pushers also have a red stripe, and the crown features Mario’s M logo too. Inscribed on the case back are the words, “Tag Heuer X Super Mario Limited Edition,” and the whole thing is presented in a beautiful red travel case.

Technically the smartwatch hasn’t changed from other models in the current collection. It has a 45mm case made of stainless steel, is water-resistant to 5 ATM, a heart rate monitor on the back, and runs Google’s Wear OS software. Only 2,000 Tag Heuer X Super Mario Limited Edition smartwatches will be made, and it costs $2,150 or 1,800 British pounds. It’ll be available through Tag Heuer’s online store and selected boutique retail stores from July 15.

Wonder no more: the new voice of Mario has revealed himself
Wiggly pipe in Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Genshin Impact voice actor Kevin Afghani revealed himself as the new voice for both Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Earlier this year, we learned that longtime Mario voice actor Charles Martinet would be taking a step back from the role and become a Mario Ambassador. At the time, Nintendo said that it would not reveal the voice actor before the game's launch; instead, it encouraged people to check out the game's credits when it dropped. That hasn't stopped people from speculating, though. Many thought it would be frequent Iron Man voice actor Mick Wingert, but Wingert denied that was true. Now, Kevin Afghani has revealed himself as the new voice of Mario and Luigi one week before the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
"Incredibly proud to have voiced Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder," Afghani wrote on Twitter. "Thanks to Nintendo for inviting me into the Flower Kingdom!" Afghani is best-known as the voice of Arnold in Genshin Impact. This is certainly the most notable game role Afghani has had yet though, and he may be the new name that we associate with the Mario Bros. for years to come.

IGN corroborated Afghan's claim, and we've also reached out to Nintendo to confirm that Afghani is the new voice of Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. We will update this article when we get a response. Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on October 20.

Nintendo is launching a Nintendo Switch - OLED Model Mario Red Edition in October. The news capped off the company's Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct today, which shared new details on the upcoming platformer.

This new themed version of the latest Nintendo Switch iteration is completely red across the system and Joy-Cons. On the back of it, players can find a silhouette of Mario and hidden coins. It's not as detailed as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's OLED model, but it does look very sleek. This Mario Red Edition system will come out on October 6, two weeks ahead of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's release.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a new Yoshi’s Island track — and it’s perfect
Birdo sails through the sky in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Yoshi's Island course.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just got even bigger. The fourth wave of its Booster Course Pack DLC just dropped on Nintendo Switch, adding eight more tracks to the racing game. The list includes some classics from the GameCube, Wii, and Game Boy Advance installments of the series, but it's most exciting addition is an entirely original one: Yoshi's Island.

As you may have guessed, the new course draws inspiration from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. On a visual level, it's one of the Mario Kart's most delightful tracks yet. The first leg has players racing through yellow rolling hills that are packed with little references to Yoshi's standalone games. From the starting line, you can see Poochy sitting on an oversized mailbox and catch some Chain Chomps delightfully bouncing around in the distance. Later, you'll spot some Goonies flying in the sky and a giant purple Blargg.
