Twitter Delays Upgrade to Bring Iran Demonstrations

Twitter was supposed to shut down for about 90 minutes to perform a critical network upgrade, but that’s been delayed, according to a blog announcement by company head Biz Stone.

The microblogging site has become a vital conduit to the outside world for those protesting the results of elections in Iran. Along with Facebook and Flickr, it’s currently blocked in the country, but tech-savvy young Iranians have been able to get Tweets out using proxies. Information on the protests is sent via #iranelection.

Twitter thought it better to delay the upgrade, during which time the site would have been unavailable, and keep channels open. Twitter has become an important source of citizen journalism.

Although Stone didn’t say so, other reports have stated that the US government asked Twitter to delay the work to allow the flow of information to remain uninterrupted. No one has confirmed that, however.

Twitter is facing its own outages as Facebook users flock to other sites

When Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram all went down, the groundswell of people rushing to other platforms to continue their social posting and messaging -- likely to poke fun at Facebook, frankly -- was intense. So much so, it seems, that Twitter is also experiencing problems.

Everyone's favorite doomsday watchlist Downdetector shows many reports of issues with Twitter, and staff members here at Digital Trends are seeing intermittent problems loading tweets -- both on the timeline and from individual links. So far the issue doesn't seem universal, and content usually loads after a handful of page refreshes, so we can hope this is a little blip and not the start of a larger problem.

Twitter for web returns after major outage on Wednesday

Twitter for web experienced serious service issues around the world for several hours on Wednesday evening, preventing users from viewing tweets and other content. The problem started at around 10 p.m. ET and took nearly three hours for the company to fix. Twitter's mobile app appeared to be unaffected.

Twitter Support acknowledged the issue at 10:52 p.m. ET, saying: "Profiles’ tweets may not be loading for some of you on web and we’re currently working on a fix. Thanks for sticking with us!"
